General Description#
The Open Source Service Area (OSSA) is situated in Research Engineering and conducts a range of activities that support open source software within The Alan Turing Institute.
The Alan Turing Institute is the United Kingdom’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. Named after Alan Turing, the renowned British mathematician and logician, the institute is dedicated to advancing world-class research in data science and artificial intelligence, and driving their impact on industry, society and education. Through partnerships with several universities and businesses, the institute aims to conduct research that is geared at solving real-world problems. Although the institute’s website doesn’t specifically mention a focus on scientific open source, their championing of collaborative research and commitment to sharing knowledge suggest an alignment with open source principles. They also host a wide range of events and activities that promote knowledge sharing and collaboration in the scientific community.
Core Objectives#
The OSSA’s current priorities include:
Updating Turing/ team policies on open source.
Better recognition for Turing people’s contributions to open source (both for non-Turing and Turing projects).
General tidying up of ATI repositories (ensuring repos have licenses, archiving unmaintained repos).
Developing guidelines for open-sourcing a previously closed source project.
